 ABOUT CARRIAGES BOUTIQUE WINES 

If you appreciate handcrafted, single vineyard wines, you’re likely to love Carriages. The boutique vineyard is just 5 acres set in picturesque grounds with dams and she-oak forest. It produces around 500 cases each year, when conditions are at their best for producing premium vintages. The vine management is almost entirely by hand with the award winning wines crafted by one of the Hunter’s top winemakers. 
Planted to vines in ’98 the vineyards are east-west running, sitting in rich alluvial clay soils. Varietals include Shiraz and Chardonnay that are made in the modern Hunter Valley style without a heavy oak overload. An occasional special release Rosé is also produced when conditions are just right.  
We invite you to join our wine club, to visit us, to stay on the vineyard, to take in the picturesque setting and enjoy our wines.

OUR WINES – SHIRAZ

Carriages Shiraz is a glorious, classic Hunter Shiraz made with single vineyard fruit from our east-west facing alluvial vineyard at Halls Road. Matured in French Oak barriques for 12 months, this medium bodied style shows ripe blackberry and plum fruit with well integrated oak characteristics and a supple tannin structure. We release only 200 cases at cellar door each year so if you enjoy beautiful handcrafted shiraz you can join our wine club or order now.

2014 SHIRAZ

An excellent hot growing season culminated in beautifully ripened Shiraz bunches. This stylish modern expression of a Hunter Valley Shiraz exhibits ripe plum and dark chocolate in lovely harmony with earthy spice elements. It is matured for 17 months in selected French Oak barriques, adding delicious warm layers. Excellent drinking now or cellar for short to mid-term. Great things are expected for this wine. Winner silver medal. 95 points. 
Growing season – Warm to hot Spring saw good rains for budburst, and a hot, early harvest with picking in Feb.
  • Alcohol – 14%
  • Colour – Deep ruby red

2015 SHIRAZ

Extended warm dry conditions this year produced an intensely rich smaller crop. This 2015 Shiraz is an elegant medium-bodied wine displaying concentrated mulberry and blackberry flavours with warming spice and elegant fine tannins leading to a rich finish. It has matured for 17 months in selected French Oak hoghead barrels. Excellent drinking now or cellar for mid-long-term. Great things are expected for this wine. 
Growing season – Warm and sunny spring for budburst was followed by cooler December. January saw a mix of hot days with more rain continuing through February. Harvesting occurred mid-February. 
  • Alcohol – 13.6%
  • Colour – Deep ruby red

 OUR WINES – CHARDONNAY

Carriages Chardonnay is made from a small parcel of east-west facing vines on the alluvial gentle slopes of Carriages Boutique Vineyard. Part matured in new French oak for 12 months, this elegant and well-balanced style displays fresh stone fruit with balancing creamy touches. Some say it’s the best little patch of chardonnay in the Hunter Valley, winning Gold Medals in 2011 and 2014 at the Hunter Valley Wine Show. We only ever release about 200 cases at cellar door each year so if you enjoy beautiful handcrafted Chardonnay, get involved and join our wine club or order now.

2013 SCARLETT'S PROMISE CHARDONNAY

Fresh and lively showing regional white peach and nectarine fruit with balancing creamy touches. 12 months in French oak provides great structure with fine delicate flavours. Two thirds remain unwooded and are blended back before bottling to give the wine a clean fresh finish. Limited release. Excellent drinking now or cellar for 5+ years.
Growing season – Warm to hot Spring saw good rains for budburst, and a hot, early harvest.
  • Alcohol – 13%
  • Colour – bright straw green

2014 Scarlett's Promise CHARDONNAY

Deliciously ripe bunches were handpicked on a hot January day. Complex, beautiful and complete with a crisp peachy core, hints of blanched almonds and balancing creamy touches from 12 months on lees in new French oak. Excellent current drinking or for short to mid cellaring. Very limited release of only 960 bottles. WINNER Top Gold, Best in Class, Best 2014 Chardonnay in Show at HV Wine Show, 96 points. 
Growing season – Excellent conditions. Hot dry conditions interspersed with bouts of significant rain made for a stellar vintage. Picked late Jan.
  • Alcohol – 13%
  • Colour – Bright straw with a green hue

2015 SCARLETT'S PROMISE CHARDONNAY

For 2015 the Lower Hunter experienced a dry winter and spring that changed with good rains through December. A moderate summer meant balanced fruit character through good vineyard management. Picked in late January. Matured in new and older French oak barriques to provide a delicate texture and complexity with a hint of oak, retaining the essential buttery citrus notes. Excellent drinking now or cellar for 5+ years. 
Growing season – Good conditions. Dry conditions earlier in the season improving through December and into January. Picked late January.
  • Alcohol – 13%
  • Colour – Bright straw with a green hue

Very drinkable style, already an award-winner. An elegant Provence-style single vineyard Rosé made from the shiraz grapes of the Welly’s Block vineyard - a small parcel of east west facing vines through which you drive to arrive at Carriages Boutique Hotel. This is a special release which doesn’t happen every year; so don’t hesitate to join our mailing list.

2017

An elegant dry Rose with hints of Provence, handpicked early morning on a misty cool day. It has a lively character, showing a fresh array of red fruits lifted by perfectly judged acidity. A well-balanced Rosé with a long clean finish. Only 800 bottles released. 
Growing season - Ideal conditions in the lead up to vintage, abundant rain dictated a last harvest. 
  • Alcohol – 12%
  • Colour – Pretty pale cherry
